This variation on an early
classic-style Poncho Serape design is hand loomed and available
in 12-ply cashmere.
It is sized to approximate
the original poncho's dimensions, 82.5"x 53". There
is a half-inch red suede binding on the outer edge and suede reinforces
the 12 inch center neck opening.
The circa 1840-60 poncho
that inspired this design is in the Southwest Museum of the American
Indian in Los Angeles and was illustrated in Southwest
Textiles: Weavings of the Navajo and Pueblo by Kathleen Whitaker.
As quoted in Whitaker's
book, Charles Lummis, founder of the Southwest Museum, said in 1925,
"This bayeta [is] the most extraordinary blanket I have ever
seen..."
