  Silk Scarves

Scarf 1

33 x 35 inches

1840-60 Navajo Serape Design

This silk scarf is inspired by a serape that was owned by William Randolph Hearst, whose amazing Navajo blanket collection is among the best in the world.

Hearst once accused the Fred Harvey Company of keeping the best blankets for themselves. Hearst told them to start sending him their best right away. Clearly, this was one of the best. It is now in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History.

Scarf 2

33 x 35 1/2 inches

1885 Navajo Chief Blanket Design

The woman’s shoulder blanket that inspired this scarf was woven circa 1885, allowing the weaver to use dyes that had not been available in the 1840s and 50s. This explains why there are more colors in this design (maroon, for instance) than in earlier Navajo weaving.

The blanket was purchased from legendary Santa Fe Indian art dealer Rex Arrowsmith in 1965 and is now in the collection of the University of Colorado Museum at Boulder.
