The  Indigenous American folks, also labeled as American Indians, had been existing on the landmass of North American for numerous years and not later than the time when the Americas were revealed, it is anticipated that there were more than ten million indigenous Americans by then existing on the landmass.

The New Dakota Pipeline

With the new year here and a new president in office, many things have already changed very quickly for the people of North Dakota. In particular, many Native Americans are affected by the new pipeline that was put into official documents by President Trump. During the fall, many Native Americans and other activists fought very hard to make sure this project would never pass.

With a new president in office this wasn’t the case at all. The new oil pipeline will start construction sometime this year, and essentially cuts out the need to transport oil via train. There are plans to construct it using American steel products and hire a ton of the area’s local concrete contractors to contribute to the pipeline. This whole project has caused a lot of controversy in the Native American community, especially those in North Dakota.

Endangered California: Serious Flooding Close

The Oroville Dam is regarded as the tallest dam in the U. S. at 770 feet (235 m) high. It serves mainly as a flood control, hydroelectricity generation as well as a means of water supply. It is in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada east of the Sacramento Valley. It is about 159 miles northeast of San Francisco. This dam is notable for impounding the second largest California human-made lake. It can store more than 3.5 million acre-feet of water. It is one of the key features of the California State Water Project after completion by the California Department of Water Resources.

Even though much difficulties were encountered before the completion of the dam; the dam was a success. It was reported that during its construction, multiple floods and a train wreck was experienced. Recently after years of completion, the dam faces a very severe crisis. This crisis has led to the order for the evacuation of almost 200, 000 individuals.

The plan to have a project developed for irrigation purposes of the highly fertile Central Valley. Thus, in 1935, the Central Valley Project, a federal project, planned to develop the Sacramento and San Joaquin river systems for irrigation. However, in 1945, California experienced an economic boom as well as a rapid urban and commercial growth, especially in the central and southern portion. Thus, it became evident that the state could not only depend on solely a water system that is geared primarily towards agriculture. Thus, the California State Legislature enacted an Act, under which a study was conducted about to the California’s water supplies. Continue reading Endangered California: Serious Flooding Close

The Ghost Dance: A Movement of Hope for Things to Come

In the 1800’s, the Native Americans were suffering at the hands of the Western world. On the reservations where they lived, the conditions were so bad that the people were starting to despair. That’s where Paiute prophet Wovoka came in, promising a return to the days when America was uncolonized.

He’d seen a vision, he said. The earth would return to its natural state, the white people would be gone, and Native Americans and their ancestors could live on the land in peace. If they danced the “round dance” for 5 days straight every six weeks, sang special songs, and bathed in a river afterwards, he promised these dreams of a renewed world would eventually become a reality.

Native Americans are a demographic with rich and varied cultures, and they’ve worked hard to preserve and respect their heritage in the present day. Staying connected and having a community to share experiences with are needs almost every person can relate to.

Learn About the Navajo Casinos

It’s not out of the ordinary for normal Americans to associate Navajos and other Native Americans with casinos. Gambling is illegal in most parts all across the United States. But, Indian reservations are not under sovereign control, and the United States has no jurisdiction to forbid gambling on Native American property. There are nearly 500 gambling operations that almost 250 Native tribes operate, generating over $26 billion dollars in revenue for all of these tribes.

How did this begin? In the 1970’s a Native American couple were taxed for their property, their first ever. They fought it at the local and state level, losing both. Then, it was brought to the Supreme Court, who stated that the state has no right to tax Indians on their reservations. In addition, they said the state has no right to regulate any Indian activities on their property. Gaming, which was illegal at the state level, could now be considered for the beginning of operating gaming industries across many locations of Indian reservation in the United States.  Continue reading Learn About the Navajo Casinos

The Navajo Nation Are Not Urban Outfitters

urban outfitters navajo

A few years ago, the Navajo Nation got some unwanted negative attention towards them, and it was practically unwarranted. Urban Outfitters was having some major problems at their Manhattan store when they were caught having bed bugs, and delayed on properly getting an exterminator. It took them months to actually get an exterminator to properly take care of it. Employees were begging for the company to take care of the bed bug problems so they could stop being bit.

Where the Navajo Nation comes into this mess is that they believe that Urban Outfitters breached the trademark and ended up violating the federal Indian Arts and Crafts Act. In the eyes of the Navajos, they inappropriately labeled items “Navajo Hipster Panty,” and “Navajo Flask.” Navajo people owns trademarks of the names and feels that Urban Outfitters offends their people naming these products without permission. These items are not what they stand for.  Continue reading The Navajo Nation Are Not Urban Outfitters

Basic History and Usage of Plants on Earth

Plants are just as much, if not more a part of this existence on Earth as we are. Before any animals were even able to walk on land, there were plants that were growing in the soil. Our history as beings on this planet has grown right alongside plants, and it can be argued, that we are at this point today primarily due to plants.

The first type of plant that we know of that formed on this Earth were algal mats. Most of you know this as basically that green goop found in oceans and lakes. It formed over a billion years ago. This possibly developed into the types of plants that we know today that perform photosynthesis. Once plants started to show up on land, they essentially took over the planet.
